今天雪很大,很多預(yù)定席位的同學(xué)沒(méi)有來(lái)參加我們的宣講會(huì)。

我在這里貼上我們的handout,希望對(duì)大家的英語(yǔ)學(xué)習(xí)能有所幫助:

 The key to master the English language is called imitation, which is also the key to master any other language.

Here are a few tips to work on your English:

 

1.      Read often. Be it an online article, newspaper or a novel, it is always a good habit to read something written in English regularly. Your reading material gives you a sense of not only how the native English-speaking people use the language but also the cultural context and underpinning logic relevant to the language. These are the things you should think about if you are serious about improving your English. (ChinaDaily, Economist, Mark Twain, Bernard Shaw)

2.      Write often and make efforts to improve your writing. Writing is mirror image of reading, since reading gives you the inputs (grammar, idioms, vocabulary, and logic) and writing offers you a chance to produce some outputs (apply whatever you have learnt from reading in your writing). Without good writing ability, you can never say your English is good enough.

3.      Listening and Speaking. Again, listening is the input function. Speaking is the output function. Learn by imitation. (Friends, CSI, movies with subtitles in both English and Chinese and etc.)

4.      Never practice your English by speaking to your friends or classmates (whose mother tongue is not English) if you are literally trying to translate every single word of your speech into English. This is exactly how we create the language called Chinglish. Learning a language is never equivalent to picking up words.

5.      Always consult a dictionary whenever you are not certain about how to use a particular word. Students tend to check the meaning of a word with a electronic dictionary, then use it in their writing without paying attention to form, tense, idiomatic use of the word. This has caused an awful lot of mistakes in students’ writing.
