　　蘇州有個(gè)書生叫范杞梁，為了逃避官府的追捕，他不得不四處躲藏。有一天，他逃到了孟家花園，無意中遇到了孟姜女。孟姜女是一個(gè)聰明美麗的姑娘，她和父母一起把范杞梁藏了起來。兩位老人很喜歡范杞梁，就把孟姜女許配給他作了妻子。

　　新婚不到三天，范杞梁就被公差抓去修長城了。孟姜女哭得象淚人似的，苦苦地等待丈夫歸來。半年過去了，范杞梁一點(diǎn)消息也沒有。這時(shí)已是深秋季節(jié)，北風(fēng)四起，蘆花泛白，天氣一天比一天冷了。孟姜女想起丈夫遠(yuǎn)在北方修長城，一定十分寒冷，就親手縫制了寒衣，啟程上路，要到萬里長城去尋找范杞梁。

　　一路上，孟姜女不知經(jīng)歷了多少艱難，吃了多少苦，才來到了長城腳下。誰知修長城的民工告訴她，范杞梁已經(jīng)死了，尸骨被填進(jìn)了城墻里。聽到這個(gè)令人心碎的消息，孟姜女只覺得天昏地暗，一下子昏倒在地，醒來后，她傷心地痛哭起來，只哭得天愁地慘，日月無光。

　　不知哭了多久，忽聽得天搖地動(dòng)般地一聲巨響，長城崩塌了幾十里，露出了數(shù)不清的尸骨。孟姜女咬破手指，把血滴在一具具的尸骨上，她心里暗暗禱告:如果是丈夫的尸骨，血就會(huì)滲進(jìn)骨頭，如果不是，血就會(huì)流向四方。終于，孟姜女用這種方法找到了范杞梁的尸骨。她抱著這堆白骨，又傷心地痛哭起來。
